Travel insurance – what it might cover

When going on vacation there are so many things to consider and consider, but one thing that almost no one thinks about is travel insurance. No matter how well you plan your vacation, unexpected things can happen, and this is where travel insurance comes into play. It can compensate you for unforeseen emergencies. Depending on the length of stay and type of trip, there are different types of travel insurance to choose from.

• Trip Cancellation/Interruption Protection – these policies cover vacation cancellations due to sudden illness or death, weather, urgent military service, jury duty, pre-departure cruise line or airline bankruptcy. Many also include terrorism insurance, which will reimburse your costs if the U.S. State Department issues a travel advisory. This warning advises people not to travel within a specific country for a specific period of time.

• Medical emergencies – this is useful if you plan to travel to underdeveloped countries. It also covers people who have a chronic illness that may require medical attention at some point during their trip. The policy reimburses you for the costs of medication and doctor’s visits and sometimes also covers medical evacuation out of the country. Be sure to check with your insurance company for details as travel health insurance policies vary.

• Non-refundable tickets – you may also be able to take out travel insurance to cover this if your trip needs to be canceled for many different reasons. There are plans that even cover missed connections. This can be a life-saver when there are flight delays, confusion or the airport terminal is overcrowded.

• Comprehensive insurance package – a package for frequent travelers or longer trips. This package offers a wide range of insurance coverage and the best value for money. Some of these packages allow you to choose what type of insurance coverage you want to include.

• Cruise ships: This can cover if a cruise is delayed and the traveler needs to change their hotel reservation, or the trip is canceled and you need to arrange a last-minute trip home.

Other expenses or situations may also be covered, including:

• Must be flown to a medical facility

• Medical procedure costs if your health insurance is not recognized in the jurisdiction

• Problems with hotel booking

• Paying for a hotel if your flight is delayed

• Replacing important items if luggage is delayed or lost

• Errors in flight planning when the traveler is not at fault

• Legal assistance in an emergency

• Transportation if you need to return home due to an emergency or the death of close relatives
