Summer is here – are your “toys” protected?

As the weather warms up, people everywhere are pulling out their favorite summer toys, including recreational vehicles (RVs), boats, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs).

Unfortunately, you cannot assume that your part-time vehicles are properly insured under your existing vehicle and/or home contents insurance. And rather than simply transferring these significant investments to another policy, it’s best to look for policies that are specifically designed for each individual policy.

RV insurance

Insurance coverage for recreational vehicles such as travel trailers, RVs, fifth wheels, and RVs provides protection that regular automobile insurance does not provide. Here are some reasons why you should consider RV insurance in addition to your car insurance:

  • Roadside assistance: Even if your car insurance covers some on-road costs, it may not cover towing that big, heavy RV – leaving you footing the bill.
  • Financial Protection: Insurers that offer RV insurance often have adjusters who know how to look for damage that is specific to RVs, including specialty RV parts like awnings, pull-out stairs and appliances.
  • Personal Property Protection: Your “home away from home” likely contains things you wouldn’t keep in your car, such as: Some items, such as camcorders, laptops and jewelry, may not be covered by car insurance.
  • Protect your investment: RVs are expensive! It’s a good idea to carry “full replacement cost coverage” to ensure full payment is made if the vehicle is beyond repair, rather than a refund based on current market value.

Boat insurance

Don’t assume that your shiny new boat is covered by your homeowner’s insurance. A boat is essentially a moving vehicle. Therefore, you need insurance coverage similar to an automobile policy, including protection for:

  • Mayhem that your boat inflicts on others.
  • Damage to property Your boat causes damage to docks and other boats.
  • Physical harm to your boat in case you hit something or run aground.

You should also consider comprehensive cover against theft, vandalism, fire and flood; Personal property insurance for fishing equipment and other items; Uninsured boater insurance (like uninsured car insurance) and even “boat assistance” if you need towing service.

Motorcycle insurance

Motorcycle insurance is essential – and like car insurance, the price can vary depending on the type of bike you ride. In other words, insuring a high-performance sports bike usually costs more than insuring a less powerful bike, scooter or moped.

The components of comprehensive motorcycle insurance are also similar to automobile insurance, including collision insurance (to cover damage to your bike as a result of an accident), comprehensive insurance, bodily injury liability insurance, property damage liability insurance, uninsured motorist insurance, and roadside assistance.
