Airplane crashes in Martha’s Vineyard
A passenger on a small airplane seized the controls on Saturday and caused it to crash on a Massachusetts island after the pilot suffered a medical emergency, police said. The crash happened on Saturday afternoon near Martha’s Vineyard Airport in West Tisbury, Massachusetts.
Massachusetts State Police said the 79-year-old male pilot suffered an emergency during the plane’s final approach. State police said the accident was caused by “a hard landing outside the runway, which caused the left wing of the aircraft to break in half.” Officials did not name anyone on the plane and said both were taken to the hospital.
After this the pilot was taken to a hospital in Boston in a life-threatening condition. Police said the woman passenger did not suffer any injuries and was discharged from a local hospital.
The 2006 Piper Meridian airplane took off from Westchester County, New York, earlier Saturday afternoon. Police said the pilot and passenger are residents of Connecticut.
The accident is being investigated by state police and the Federal Aviation Administration. State police said the plane was removed and moved to a safe location at the airport and the crash site was cleared. The crash occurred nearly 24 years after the Piper crash, which killed John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessett, and his sister. Lauren Bassett from Martha’s Vineyard.
